From then to now

Our Background

The diocese of Mbeya was erected in 1932 but it has to wait until the end of the second world war to have its official start in 1953. The first Bishop was His Excellence Bishop Anton Van Oorschot (1947- 1964) to be followed by Rt. Rv. James D Sangu, the first indegineous Bishop (1966-1997). In 1997 February, Mbeya community had the gift of the second indigenous Bishop, Rt. Rev. Evaristo Marcus Chengula IMC.


The diocese was evangelized by the Missionaries of Africa famously known as White Fathers who moving from the current diocese of Sumbawanga, crossed lake Rukwa to establish the parish of Mkulwe in 1898 which later came to be the first parish of the diocese of Mbeya.

Mbeya Region

Politically Mbeya Region originally belonged to the Southern Highlands Province. It is located in the South Western Corner of the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Mbeya Region which is almost equivalent to the diocese of Mbeya it has 9 districts as follows:- Chunya, Ileje, Kyela, Mbalali, Mbeya Rural, Mbeya City, Mbozi, Momba and Rungwe. Politically the region had been divided into two religions, and hence creating a new region known as Songwe. According to the National census of 2012 the population of Mbeya region was 2,707,410. The Catholics is 316,471.

Our Mission


Our purpose is to enable our communities to develop both spiritually and physically. This development will be built on principles of Christ in a whole environment.

Organisation Structure

The diocesan Curia is led by the Bishop assisted by the Vicar General, Deans, head of Departments and Commissions as shown below:.

  • These are Vicar General, Administrator, Secretary of the Bishop, Pastoral Coordinator, Education Secretary, Vocation Director, Catechetical Director, Director of Caritas, Health Secretary, Director of AIDS Program, Director of Lay Apostolate, Director of Justice and Peace, Director of Social Communication, Director of Liturgy, Director of Youth, Director of Pontifical Mission Societies, Director of Apostolate of Prayer. These are heads of respectful Department.

  • The Bishop’s Council, Senate of Priests, Pastoral Council, Meeting of Deans, Finance and Planning Council, Education Board and Medical Board.

  • Diocesan Personnel
  • The diocese is served by both diocesan and Missionaries priests:-

    a.) Diocesan Priests are 108
    b.) Fidei Donum Priests are 2
    c.) Missionaries Priests are 15

    A number of diocesan priests are serving in the national Church Institutions, other diocese and some are pursuing their further studies in and outside the Country.

    There are various Religious Congregations serving the diocese. Women Congregations are:-

    a.) Diocesan Religious Congregation (Our Lady Queen of Apostles of Mbeya) in total number of 229
    b.) Sisters of St. Charles Baromeo
    c.) Our Lady Queen of Africa (Diocesan Congregation from Sumbawanga)
    d.) Carmelites Sisters of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus
    e.) Sisters of St. Vincent de Paul
    f.) Theresa Sisters of Iringa
    g.) Benedictine Sisters of Chipole (Songea)
    h.) Mgolole Sisters from Morogoro
    i.) Passionist Sisters
    j.) Sisters of St. Anne of Bangalore

    This all make a total of 299 Sisters working in the diocese of Mbeya
