The key mission of the Diocesan Church is to preach the Gospel to all the people living in the area of the Diocese (Apostolate) and care for the people who belong to the church (Pastoral care). The responsibility of the Bishop is to gather the people in the Holy Spirit; the means proposed for this are the proclamation of the Gospel and the celebration of the Eucharist.
This means that the task of the Church is to lead people to the knowledge of God. The Diocese while entrusted to the Bishop sees propagation of the faith as its priority area. The focus of the African Synod is the family of God. The diocese through propagation of the faith is addressing issues that the pressures of modern life have brought on the social fabric. These include the family, youth, widows, orphans and other vulnerable and marginalized people. Therefore, it is from here that the diocese has 49 parishes to make sure that every Catholic is reached where he or she is within the diocese.
The liberalization process has decreased the Government involvement in provision of social services including education. This development in an environment where the education system was severely underdeveloped is likely to affect the system further. The church also has a history of excellence in education. If education is to develop further, particularly at the secondary and tertiary levels, then the Church has to be involved in a selective and sustainable manner.
Therefore, having this goal the diocese had established the following primary, secondary schools and Colleges ,Secondary schools are: Pandahill Secondary, St. Mary’s Junior Seminary, St. Francis Girl Secondary, Consolata Secondary,St. Thomas More secondary, Mbaga Tuzide Secondary and James Sagu Secondary. The following secondary schools are managed by the diocese of Mbeya, these include, Wenda Secondary, Igawilo secondary, Irambo secondary and Ngana secondary. Furthermore, the diocese has primary School namely St. Thomas More primary school, Kisa English Medium. Colleges are Mwambani Nursing college, Iyunga Vocational Training Centre, Mbeya Trade School and Antonia Trade school.
The Diocesan priority and focus is on those programs and interventions that seek to make people more self-reliant and that encourage them to be involved in gainful activities that will increase their food production, income and therefore improve their standard of living. The Diocese also seeks to address attitudinal issues that were embraced from the previous political systems.
One of the major hindrances to individuals in business is capital and access to credit. In encouraging people’s involvement in gainful activities, access to capital through seed money and access to affordable credit will be a priority. The success of any business initiatives will require the development of business, management and marketing skills.
